Alumni Class Notes

Bonnie Ballard (DVM '94) won the 2009 Rick Perkins Teacher of the Year award at Gwinnett Technical College. The award is peer-nominated, and this was the second time Dr. Ballard has won; she received the award previously in 2001.

Amy Harrison (DVM '96) has been employed at the Coral Springs Animal Hospital since 2002 and recently opened up a 40,000 square foot facility. It encompasses emergency/critical care, specialty services (cardiology, neurology, dermatology, surgery, internal medicine, oncology and behavioral medicine) and general practitioner care.

Matt Booth (DVM '97) has entered the realm of practice ownership as a partner in the Alpenglow Veterinary Specialty + Emergency Center, one of the most advanced specialty and emergency centers in Colorado. The center will perform certain aspects of cardiology and critical care that can typically only be obtained in a university setting.

Dr. Booth grew up in Virginia Beach, Va., and was an avid surfer and alpine skier. During veterinary school, he was employed as a veterinary technician at South Athens Animal Clinic and with the critical care unit at the University. This experience led Dr. Booth to recognize his passion for small animal emergency and critical care. After graduation, he began working at the Animal Emergency Clinic of Augusta, where there was a great shortage of emergency veterinarians.

Through mentorship by Dr. Roger Gfeller, DACVECC, Dr. Booth became the primary emergency clinician for everything from motor vehicular trauma to massive bee envenomation. In 1999, Dr. Booth moved to Boulder County, Colo., where he has continued to practice critical care, emergency medicine and surgery. He lives in Boulder County with his wonderful wife, Jen, a sweet daughter, Ashley, and new son, Blake.

Edith Rogers (DVM '03) recently joined Peachtree Hills Animal Hospital in Atlanta. An Atlanta native, Dr. Rogers previously served as a staff veterinarian at Adobe Animal Hospital in Palo Alto, Calif., a 21-doctor practice open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. She began practicing small animal medicine in Beverly Hills at the Miller Robertson Animal Hospital.

Edith Rogers

After completing her DVM, Dr. Rogers completed a one-year rotating internship at the Animal Medical Center in Manhattan, New York's largest facility for animal care, research, and education with over 90 veterinarians and average of 50,000 cases a year.

In April 2009, Dr. Rogers returned to Atlanta with her family. Dr. Rogers lives in Buckhead with her husband, Michael, their son Paul, their dogs Jack and Lucy, and their cat Phoebe.

David Moore (DVM '77) was sworn in as a Special Government Employee and member of the U.S. Air Force Scientific Advisory Board. He is the only life scientist on the SAB and the first veterinarian to serve as a member.

Dr. Moore is a Senior Market Manager in the Joint Interagency Group within the National Security Global Business at the Battelle Eastern Science and Technology (BEST) Center in Aberdeen, Md. After receiving his DVM, he earned a PhD in physiology from Emory University School of Medicine in 1984. He has board certification from the American Board of Toxicology and the American College of Veterinary Preventive Medicine.

Joe Bartges (DVM '87) received the 2009 B. Ray Thompson, Sr. Outstanding Faculty Performance Award from the University of Tennessee Institute of Agriculture. Bartges is the Acree Endowed Chair of Small Animal Research and professor of medicine and nutrition and at the University of Tennessee CVM. This award recognizes excellence in teaching and service to the Institute of Agriculture.

He previously received the Pfizer Carl J. Norden Distinguished Teacher Award in 2000 and 2008, the UT National Alumni Association Excellence in Teaching Award in 2007, the UGA Veterinary Alumni Association Young Achiever Award in 1997, and was the Coughlin Distinguished Professor lecturer for the UT Alumni Conference in 2009.

His research interests are in urinary tract disorders (particularly minimally invasive management of urinary stone disease, urinary cancer, incontinence, idiopathic cystitis in cats, renal failure and urinary tract infections) and nutrition (particularly nutritional management of disease).

He has two children: Patrice, a sophomore at Maryville College in Maryville, Tenn., and Garrick, a sophomore at West High School in Knoxville, Tenn.
