Dean Sheila W. Allen
Dr. Sheila W. Allen is Dean of the College of Veterinary Medicine of the University of Georgia. After earning her Bachelor of Arts and Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degrees from Cornell University, Dr. Allen pursed a small animal internship followed by a small animal surgical residency at the University of Georgia. Dr. Allen earned a Master of Science in Veterinary Clinical Pathology at the University of Georgia during her surgical residency, and joined the faculty of the College of Veterinary Medicine in 1986.
Dr. Allen worked with other faculty to teach small animal surgery to DVM students, interns, and residents, and introduced computer-assisted instruction of surgical motor skills to the curriculum. Her areas of interest include surgical oncology, reconstructive surgery, and post-operative pain management. A Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Surgeons, Dr. Allen served on the Board of Regents of that organization.
Dr. Allen was appointed Associate Dean for Academic Affairs in 1997. Under Dr. Allen’s leadership, the College of Veterinary Medicine revised the DVM curriculum to allow more flexibility for students to focus in their areas of interest, and modified admissions procedures to allow the consideration of multiple criteria in this process.
Dr. Allen was appointed Dean of the College of Veterinary Medicine in 2005. Under Dr. Allen’s leadership, the College has enhanced its research mission, particularly in the area of infectious diseases, and has established the DVM/MPH and DVM/PhD programs.
Dr. Allen serves on the Board of Directors of the Association of American Veterinary Medical Colleges. Dr. Allen also serves on the accrediting body for Schools and Colleges of Veterinary Medicine, the Council on Education of the American Veterinary Medical Association.
