SEC TV: This edition of SEC "Stories of Success" features our researchers at the Southeastern Cooperative Wildlife Disease Study and the role they played in determining cause of death in the mass blackbird die-offs in January 2011. This segment aired on ESPN.

June 30, Athens Banner-Herald: Phi Zeta honors given to faculty, students. Faculty and students were honored for excellence in teaching, research and service at the annual Phi Zeta Veterinary Honor Society induction ceremony in April.

June 28, Athens Banner-Herald: Prof tackles polio vaccine. Ralph Tripp, a researcher in the infectious diseases department, has received a $100,000 Grand Challenges grant from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. Tripp is researching ways to make polio vaccines cheaply and more quickly to vaccinate people in parts of the world where the virus still produces outbreaks.

June 3, Athens Banner-Herald: Feathered assault victim on the mend after treatment at vet school. Daisy the Mallard and her ducklings came to the UGA CVM Wildlife Treatment Center from the Lovett School, where she sustained a broken leg after an altercation with a goose on the grounds of the school. After surgery, two months of aftercare and physical therapy, Daisy and her ducklings were ready to be released at Lovett June 3. Private donations to the Kate Grant Wildlife Treatment Fund covered expenses for Daisy and her ducklings.

May 15, JAVMA News: Atmosphere at veterinary schools being probed. "Campus climate dominated much of the discussion at this year's Iverson Bell Symposium, and the consensus was that the first step in reaching an inclusive environment for underrepresented groups at veterinary schools and colleges is to conduct a climate survey." UGA's Dr. K. Paige Carmichael, associate dean for academic affairs, is a co-investigator on the study.

May 4, NeighborNewspapers.com: Atlanta Alumnae Panhellenic Association hosts their annual Spring Scholarship Luncheon and Silent Auction. Brittany Paschal, who will begin veterinary college this fall in the Class of 2015, received a scholarship from the Atlanta Alumnae Panhellenic Association.

May 2, TheHorse.com: AQHA Executive Committee Approves Grants for Horse Health Research. The AQHA and AQHA Foundation have funded nine equine medical research projects in 2011-12, including a study on "Cardiovascular Function in Horses with Acute Gastrointestinal Disease" by UGA's Dr. Michelle Barton and Dr. Steeve Gigučre.

May 2, Athens Banner-Herald: UGA Students Honored (see photo/caption). Mason Savage, class of 2011, was one of several University of Georgia students recognized during the Rotary Club’s annual Rotaract Student Service Awards luncheon, held April 27 at the Holiday Inn in Athens.

April 2011, Gates Foundation: Ralph A. Tripp, a professor in the department of infectious diseases at the CVM, will pursue an innovative global health and development research project, titled Improved Vaccine Technology to Eradicate Polio.
