About Athens and the Surrounding Area
The
University is located in Athens, a small but lively city of about 100,000
people including a student population of almost 35,000. Located in the northeastern
part of Georgia, Athens is about an hour's drive from downtown Atlanta.
Athens is two hours from the Appalachian Mountains to the north, an hour from several large lakes, and five or six hours from beaches on the east coast of Georgia and South Carolina. Canoeing and white-water rafting are available on nearby rivers.
The climate in Athens is mild and usually moderate. Winter temperatures rarely fall below freezing and snowfall is rare. Summer temperatures are typically in the high 80s with cool nights.
Considering its size, Athens offers an unusual number and diversity of
things to do. Downtown Athens caters to students, with its many coffee shops,
sidewalk cafes, restaurants, and unique stores. A major focus of student
nightlife is the wide variety of local bands which make Athens their home
base. Some, like R.E.M., have achieved national recognition.
The Classic Center Theater, located downtown in the new Civic Center, presents
Broadway plays and other productions performed by Broadway touring companies.
Music and theater productions of all kinds are also offered in the University's modern performing arts center.
The Georgia Museum of Art houses traveling exhibitions as well as permanent collections of paintings and sculpture.

The State Botanical Garden, located near the University campus on the Oconee River, offers miles of nature trails and internationally-renowned gardens.
